Recommended Middle School (6-8) DLCS Lessons

We have analyzed DESE's findings on learning pathways for 6-8 Digital Learning and Computer Science. We are excited to recommend two well-regarded curricular arcs, both free for use in any classroom: Code.org's CS Discoveries, and Common Sense Media's Digital Citizenship. Click the link above to learn more about these excellent units and other helpful lessons that can fill in some DLCS skills that aren't addressed by larger curriculum.

Background

The Massachusetts DESE Curriculum Framework for Digital Literacy and Computer Science provides the starting point for us in determining what knowledge and skills our students (and we!) need in order to thrive as citizens in the twenty-first century.

Fortunately, many corporations and nonprofits, focused on "the future of work" in our society, have spent millions developing PreK-12 curriculum that we can use to meet the challenges of the MA Framework's standards.

Unfortunately, this sector is so flooded with curriculum and resources, it can be difficult to know what to use, where to begin, how to teach it, and whether or not you're even meeting state standards.

MA DESE has worked to demystify this problem. They have been working on a Curriculum Guide that maps each major third-party curriculum to the MA DLCS Framework and supports schools as they consider how to implement the framework in the larger curriculum.

WRSD Technology Integration staff are analyzing DESE's guide and updates. We are excited to use these new resources to offer data-driven recommendations to teachers and administrators.
